The Story begins with a man confessing about a crime he did in a Dictaphone while he was in pain of a gun shot wound probably dying, his name was Walter Neff played by Fred MacMurray. The story was narrated in a form of flashbacks when it started, it tells how it began and how it has executed deliberatley. Considered one of the best Filmnoir Classic, and one of the best narrated film in a series of flashback.
Double Indemnity is a story of an Insurance salesman, mesmerized by a woman named Phyllis wife of his client which involved him in a plot that will make his colleague Keyes speak to the little man inside him, and that little man inside him turned their dream into a nightmare.
The Movie is made to deliver a message, you can try to make a perfect murder but one way or the other your conscience will get to you, unless you are one cold-blooded killer who never thought remorse does exists. And That’s what happened to Neff, it wasn’t explain how Phyllis has convinced him in doing the unthinkable, she managed to make his hands dirty for her, but at least we know the reason why his feelings changed towards her at the latter part.
Film noir’s basic plot is always murder, sex and mystery, and that is one factor that makes Double Indemnity so enigmatic, and engaging, it has thrills of sexual attraction with Neff and Phyllis, sealed their relationship with a plot to murder her husband with a life insurance policy on his head and their greed of lust and money was the key to execute their plan.
Fred McMurray, Barbara Stanwyck has delivered one of the most simplest, but elegant and yet provoking acting in the movie, their sexual encounter is more about the way they look at each other, and the body language they expressed through their dialogues. In the first 20 minutes of the story the plot was laid perfectly for the audience to know that we are expecting a crime that involves money, and betrayal with the help of a guy that is cursed by her charm, though the movie run time is almost 2 hrs, it doesn’t bore me, and even ending is presented at the beginning of the story the thrill of knowing what happened and why he end up in that chair confessing everything to Keyes was one of the best storytelling, because the little man inside him made him do it.
